All About Agriculture in Monroe County

Monroe is not a large county in terms of acreage compared to other counties of the state.  We have approximately 292,700 acres in the county and 95.9 percent or 280,700 are used in forestry and agricultural production.
Diverse would be a good term to use when you look at the agricultural production of Monroe County.  There are approximately 20 dairy farms which produce milk for part of the states dairy needs.  Many part time farmers operate cow-calf facilities contributing to beef production that will be used within the state and across the nation.  Sheep and swine are also produced in Monroe County on a limited number of farms to be utilized in the nations food chain.
Agricultural crops are another part of the county's production.  Hay, corn, wheat, barley and oats are grown by farmers in Monroe county to sustain their livestock and for sale as an agricultural crop.
Other crops are also grown to produce income within the county.  Strawberries, blueberries, grapes, apples, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, beans, sweet corn, cabbage, pumpkins, cantaloupe, watermelon among others are some of the crops you might find as you cross the hilly un-glaciated landscape.
